Join us for nighttime turtle watching Playa Samara! After being picked up from your hotel, we’ll take you to a beach in the Samara area to observe turtles laying their eggs. Depending on the season, we will take you to either the Camaronal beach or Ostional beach.
Help Protect the Turtles
This phenomenon is truly amazing and Costa Rica is one of the best places to see it. By being a part of this tour, you are not only witnessing something beautiful – you will be helping to defend these endangered species! By scaring away predators from eating their eggs and you’ll save babies during this potentially vulnerable stage of their lives. Camaronal and Ostional beaches are the nesting sites for three of the seven species of sea turtles in the world: the Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Black Hawksbill.
Why We Love Them – Our Endangered Species
These turtles are still on the endangered species list, but chances are still very good that you’ll see at least one of these fascinating creatures! During this guided walk on the beach, you’ll keep an eye out for turtles coming to shore to lay their eggs. The best place to visit Ostional Beach is during an “arribada” – a phenomenon where hundreds, and often times thousands of turtles congregate to lay their eggs. These generally occur at the beginning of the last quarter of the moon. (Usually once a month between July and December.) After some time on the beach with your guide and the turtles, we’ll take you back to your hotel.
In order to protect the turtles, this trip may only be taken with a certified guide. You may not do it on your own! Flashlights and flash photography are not permitted on the beach. In turtle nesting areas these tools disorient the turtles.
