Caribbean Wet & Wild

We call this our Caribbean Wet and Wild package because you're going to get wet (on the whitewater rafting trip) and you're going to see lot's of wildlife (on your Canopy tour or Cahuita National Park hike/boat/snorkel trip as well as in Tortuguero National Park).

This trip combines the best of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast in 4 days and 3 nights! Or take a few extra days in Puerto Viejo or Cahuita to relax and enjoy the gorgeous beaches or do other activities.  (Almost) everything is included in this package so you won't need to plan a thing. Here's what your days will look like:

Day 1 - Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River!

Early morning pickup in San Jose (or Arenal area)

Breakfast at the rafting company headquarters (about 2hrs away). Your luggage is securely stored.

Exciting whitewater rafting trip on the Pacuare River. This is our most popular rafting trip and Costa Rica's premier river trip. The ultimate blend of wilderness exposure and invigorating excitement. The Pacuare River is world famous for its pristine beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. The white water is equally exciting (rapids class III-IV). This is one of the most memorable river trips you will ever experience.  All instruction and equipment is included. (This trip is suitable for ages 12 and over, if you have younger kids we'll put you on a calmer river).  Lunch on the river is included.

Back to the rafting company HQ for drinks and then transport to your Puerto Viejo hotel.

Note:  Our usual pickup from San Jose area hotels leaves San Jose approximately 6:00 a.m., unfortunately this is too early to meet any international flights arriving that same day so you must spend the night before the first day of the trip in San Jose or Arenal area. If you'd like us to book San Jose accommodations for you, please let us know.

Customize your packageWant the ultimate in getting away from it all? Choose to spend an additional night on the river by upgrading your rafting choice to a 2 day hike and paddle trip with a night in a river lodge (additional $150 p/p). Or choose a calmer river if you're not in the mood for adventure and we'll even take $20 p/p off your package.

Day 2 - Puerto Viejo - Animal Rescue Center or Cahuita National Park

Breakfast at your hotel (included with most hotels, see hotel details below).

Pickup for your choice of our combo Animal Rescue Centre/Waterfall/Chocolate Lady trip, a boat/snorkel/hike tour of Cahuita National Park or our Full Day Jungle Adventure ($36 extra charge). Or skip all of those and just get a massage on the beach!

The Animal Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady/Waterfall tour takes you to the Jaguar Animal Rescue Centre, which offers shelter, treatment and protection to ill or wounded wild animals in the South Caribbean area.  It is a sanctuary for wild animals and they try to accommodate their jungle guests as well as they can: terrariums for the snakes, large spaces for the Congo monkeys to rest in after spending the whole day playing in the garden's trees, special quarantine cages for the animals arriving seriously injured and also a large supply of medicine and an operating theatre for emergency surgery if necessary. Your visit helps support the work of the centre.

Next we will visit an indigenous family where they make chocolate from the Cacao trees growing beside their house. You will learn and see demonstrated the process by which the cacao fruit is transformed into delicious and unique chocolate. You will have an opportunity to purchase some chocolate or other indigenous made handicrafts here.   We will also hike to a beautiful waterfall for our third destination.

The Cahuita National Park option combines a guided hike through the rainforest, a boat ride to Punta Cahuita and snorkelling. This is the #1 destination in the area and you're sure to see lot's of wildlife, in and out of the water. All snorkelling equipment is available.

Finally, for the most adventurous, you can choose our Full Day Jungle Adventure which includes Canopy, Tarzan Swing, Tree Climbing, Hike with rappels, lunch and more. This option is $36 extra per person or an additional $95 if you choose to do it in addition to the Animal Rescue/Chocolate or Cahuita tour (additional day required).

And of course if you'd rather just relax switch it out for a massage on the beach!

If these all sound good to you then add on extra days in Puerto Viejo and we'll be happy to arrange more than one! Or if you just want some days to explore the area (by bicycle is a great option!) and find some of the world's most beautiful beaches, then choose the option to add extra nights in Puerto Viejo.

Days 3 & 4 - Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park  is the third-most visited park in Costa Rica, despite the fact that it can only be reached by airplane or boat. The park has incredible biological variety, due to the existence within the reserve of eleven different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches, and lagoons. It is located in a tropical climate, is very humid, and receives up to 250 inches of rain a year.  This is the very best place in Costa Rica to spot wildlife. Monkeys, Sloths, Crocodiles, Toucans, and many colorful frogs and insects are all common sights. During the June to September turtle nesting season, this is definitely one of Costa Rica's Highlights.

Day 3 starts when we pick you up at your Puerto Viejo hotel for minibus and boat transport to Tortuguero and you'll get breakfast enroute. In Tortuguero, you'll settle into your Tortuguero Hotel which is complete with private bath, swimming pool and buffet meals!

You'll have plenty of time to see Tortuguero over the two days as your package includes

●  Two canal tours in the national park, in search of a close up view of the wildlife.

●  One guided hike in the national park

●  One trip to the interesting town of Tortuguero with a visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation.

On the afternoon of your last day, we will pick you up at your hotel and transport you to San Jose for a dinnertime arrival.  Or if you wish to continue your trip in Arenal or back in Puerto Viejo, we can bring you there too.
