Volcano, Jungle and Beach
This trip combines some of our favorite highlights of Costa Rica! Experience the stunning mountains, the lush rainforest and the jungle-hugged exotic beaches of Costa Rica's Caribbean for an unforgettable trip.
There are lots of ways you can customize your package - add days, change tours and even add destinations. Look for the symbol for ideas or play with the options on the booking form which will calculate your final price. Here's what your days will look like:
Day 1 - Departure San Jose - Arenal Volcano
Your day starts with morning pickup from your San Jose hotel. You will travel in a comfortable a/c mini-bus to La Fortuna, a small town next to Arenal Volcano. Our standard hotel choice is the San Bosco in La Fortuna town or you can also choose between other hotel options with a more resort style setting such as the Arenal Volcano Inn or Silencio del Campo.
After you've settled in we will take you to the west side of the volcano which is one of the best places for night time views. After that, you will go to Tabacón Hot Springs Resort where you can enjoy a variety of hot spring pools. Tabacón also has water slides, waterfalls and 12 different pools! Dinner is served buffet style with great views of the volcano.
Notes: (1) Our usual pickup from San Jose area hotels leaves San Jose approximately 8:15 a.m., if you are arriving Costa Rica that day you must be ready by then. Later departures can be accommodated with our private transfer option that will meet your flight at the airport and take you directly to Arenal. (2) If you are planning days on the Pacific Coast beforehand, we can also pick you up on Day 1 from your hotel at most Pacific Beach towns for no additional cost.
You can also start your tour with 1 or 2 nights in the quaint town of Monteverde and see the magical Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Then we bring you across Lake Arenal by boat to your start your Arenal tour. Monteverde options start at just $75 additional p/p including 1 night hotel and the lake crossing.
Day 2 - Arenal Volcano - Horseback Ride
Breakfast at your hotel is provided. You will be picked up at 8 a.m. for an adventurous horseback riding tour to visit the waterfall of La Fortuna. Returning to your hotel, you will have the evening on your own in La Fortuna. If clouds covered the volcano in the morning, you'll have another chance to see it in the evening as it's visible from the whole town!
Or choose to do a Zipline/Canopy tour instead (additional $26 p/p) or both tours (add $90 p/p)
Day 3 - Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River!
Early morning pickup at your Arenal hotel for a thrilling whitewater rafting trip down Costa Rica’s most popular rafting river, Rio Pacuare!
A hearty breakfast at the rafting company headquarters (about 3 hrs away) is provided. Your luggage is securely stored in a locked container. This is our most popular rafting trip and Costa Rica's premier river trip. This is the ultimate blend of wilderness exposure and invigorating excitement! The Pacuare River is world famous for its pristine beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. The white water is equally exciting (rapids class III-IV). This is truly a memorable rafting trip and we can guarantee an awesome day with lots of laughs! All instruction and equipment is included. (This trip is suitable for ages 12 and over, if you have younger kids we'll put you on a calmer river). Lunch is included on the shore of the river.Want the ultimate in getting away from it all? Choose to spend an additional night on the river by upgrading your rafting choice to a 2-day hike and paddle trip with a night in a river lodge (additional $120 p/p). Or choose a calmer river if you have youngsters and we'll even take $20 p/p off your package.
Day 4 - Puerto Viejo - Animal Rescue Center or Cahuita National Park
Breakfast at your hotel (included with most hotels, see hotel details below).
Pickup for your choice of our combo Animal Rescue Centre/Waterfall/Chocolate Lady tour, a snorkel, boat and hike tour of Cahuita National Park or our Full Day Jungle Adventure ($36 extra per person).
The Animal Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady and Waterfall tour takes you to the Animal Rescue Center, which offers shelter, treatment and protection to ill or wounded wild animals in the South Caribbean area. It is a sanctuary for wild animals and they try to accommodate their jungle guests as well as they can: terrariums for the snakes, large spaces for the monkeys to rest in after spending the whole day playing in the garden's trees, special quarantine cages for the animals arriving seriously injured and also a large supply of medicine and an operating theatre for emergency surgery if necessary. Your visit helps support the work of the center.
Next we visit an indigenous family growing cacao trees on their land. They are eager to show you the entire process of cacao fruit becoming a bar of chocolate. You will have the opportunity to purchase some of their chocolate or other indigenous handmade crafts. Please note that only part of the family speaks very limited English so if you don’t speak Spanish, your explanation of the process may be in the form of pantomime! We will also hike to a beautiful waterfall for our third destination.
The Cahuita National Park option combines a guided hike through the rain forest, a boat ride to Punta Cahuita and snorkeling. This is the #1 destination in the area and you're sure to see plenty of wildlife, in and out of the water. All snorkeling equipment is provided.
If you want a more action packed day you can choose our Full Day Jungle Adventure which includes transportation, canopy, Tarzan Swing, tree climbing, hiking and rappelling. This option is $36 extra per person or an additional $95 if you choose to do it in addition to the Animal Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady and Waterfall tour or the Cahuita National Park tour (additional day required).
If more than one of these sound good to you then add on extra days in Puerto Viejo and we'll be happy to arrange more of our great activities! If you just want some days to explore the area (by bicycle is a great option!) and find some of the world's most beautiful beaches, then choose the option to add extra nights in Puerto Viejo.

The park has incredible biological diversity due to the existence within the reserve of 11 different habitats including rainforest, swamps, beaches and lagoons. Tortuguero National Park has a humid and tropical climate receiving up to 250 inches of rain a year. Its beaches are key nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles, such as Hawksbill, Loggerheads, Green and Leatherbacks. The rivers within the park are home to sensitive populations of manatees, as well as caimans, crocodiles, and Tropical Gar, which are considered to be a living fossil. The forests are home to jaguars, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced Capuchin), and three-toed sloths. Basilisk lizards and poisonous frogs also inhabit the area, along with 375 species of birds including kingfishers, toucans, blue herons, peacocks, and parrots. There are more than 400 species of trees and approximately 2,200 species of plants. This is one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot wildlife. Monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, toucans and many colorful frogs and insects are all common sights. Coming during the turtle-nesting season from June to September is definitely one of Costa Rica's highlights!
