Caribbean Wet & Wild

Book This Trip

We call this our Caribbean Wet & Wild package because you're going to get wet on the whitewater rafting trip (that’s a 100% guarantee!) and you're going to see lots of wildlife on your jungle zipline and canopy tour or the Cahuita National Park hiking and snorkeling tour as well as in Tortuguero National Park!

This trip combines the best of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast in 4 days and 3 nights! Or take a few extra days in Puerto Viejo or Cahuita to relax and enjoy the exotic jungle-hugged beaches. (Almost) everything is included in this package so you won't need to plan a thing. Here's what your days will look like:

Day 1 - Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River!

Early morning pickup in San Jose (or Arenal area) for a thrilling whitewater rafting trip down Costa Rica’s most popular rafting river, Rio Pacuare!

A hearty breakfast at the rafting company headquarters (about 3 hrs away) is provided. Your luggage is securely stored in a locked container. This is our most popular rafting trip and Costa Rica's premier river trip. This is the ultimate blend of wilderness exposure and invigorating excitement! The Pacuare River is world famous for its pristine beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right overhead. The white water is equally exciting (rapids class III-IV). This is truly a memorable rafting trip and we can guarnatee an awesome day with lots of laughs! All instruction and equipment is included. (This trip is suitable for ages 12 and over, if you have younger kids we'll put you on a calmer river). Lunch is included on the shore of the river.

You’ll be back at the rafting company headquarters in time for a drink if you’d like and then transportation to your Puerto Viejo hotel is provided.

Note: Our usual pickup from San José area hotels leaves San José approximately 6:00 a.m. Unfortunately, this is too early to meet any international flights arriving that same day so you must spend your first night in San José or Arenal. If you'd like us to book accommodations for you, please let us know.

Customize your packageWant the ultimate in getting away from it all? Choose to spend an additional night on the river by upgrading your rafting choice to a 2-day hike and paddle trip with a night in a river lodge (additional $120 p/p). Or choose a calmer river if you have youngsters and we'll even take $20 p/p off your package.

Day 2 - Puerto Viejo - Jaguar Rescue Center or Cahuita National Park

Breakfast at your hotel (included with most hotels, see hotel details below).

Pickup for your choice of our combo Jaguar Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady and Waterfall tour, a snorkel, boat and hike tour of Cahuita National Park or our Full Day Jungle Adventure ($36 extra per person). And of course if you'd rather just relax switch it out for a massage on the beach!

The Animal Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady and Waterfall tour takes you to the Jaguar Rescue Centre, which offers shelter, treatment and protection to ill or wounded wild animals in the south Caribbean area. It is a sanctuary for wild animals and they try to accommodate their jungle guests as well as they can: terrariums for the snakes, large spaces for the monkeys to rest in after spending the whole day playing in the garden's trees, special quarantine cages for the animals arriving seriously injured and also a large supply of medicine and an operating theatre for emergency surgery if necessary. Your visit helps support the work of the centre.

Next we visit an indigenous family growing cacao trees on their land. They are eager to show you the entire process of cacao fruit becoming a bar of chocolate. You will have the opportunity to purchase some of their chocolate or other indigenous handmade crafts. Please note that only part of the family speaks very limited English so if you don’t speak Spanish, your explanation of the process may be in the form of pantomime! We hike to a beautiful waterfall for our third destination.

The Cahuita National Park option combines a guided hike through the jungle, a boat ride to Punta Cahuita and snorkeling. This is the number one destination in the area and you're sure to see plenty of wildlife, in and out of the water. All snorkeling equipment is provided.

If you want a more action-filled day you can choose our Full Day Jungle Adventure which includes transportation, lunch, a canopy tour, a Tarzan swing, tree climbing, hiking and rapelling. This option is $36 extra p/p or an additional $95 if you choose to do it in addition to the Jaguar Rescue Center/Chocolate Lady and Waterfall or the Cahuita National Park tour (additional day required).

And of course if you'd rather just relax switch it out for a massage on the beach!

If more than one of these sounds good to you then add on extra days in Puerto Viejo and we'll be happy to arrange more of our great activities! Or if you just want some days to explore the area (by bicycle is a great option!) and find some of the world's most beautiful beaches, then choose the option to add extra nights in Puerto Viejo.

Días 3 & 4 - Parque Nacional Tortuguero

Tortuguero National Park is located in the Limón Province of northeastern Costa Rica. It is the third-most visited park in Costa Rica, despite the fact that it can only be reached by airplane or boat. The park has incredible biological diversity due to the existence within the reserve of 11 different habitats including rainforest, swamps, beaches and lagoons. Tortuguero National Park has a humid and tropical climate receiving up to 250 inches of rain a year. Its beaches are key nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles, such as Hawksbill, Loggerheads, Green and Leatherbacks. The rivers within the park are home to sensitive populations of manatees, as well as caimans, crocodiles, and Tropical Gar, which are considered to be a living fossil. The forests are home to jaguars, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced Capuchin), and three-toed sloths. Basilisk lizards and poisonous frogs also inhabit the area, along with 375 species of birds including kingfishers, toucans, blue herons, peacocks, and parrots. There are more than 400 species of trees and approximately 2,200 species of plants.

This is one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot wildlife. Monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, toucans and many colorful frogs and insects are all common sights. Coming during the turtle-nesting season from July to October is definitely one of Costa Rica's highlights!

We will pick you up at your Puerto Viejo hotel and take a boat ride to Tortuguero. Breakfast is provided en route. Your hotel in Tortuguero is complete with a private bath, swimming pool and buffet meals! Tours included are 2 different canal trips in the national park, 1 guided hike and 1 trip to see the village of Tortuguero as well as a visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation.

On the afternoon of your last day, transportation will be provided from Tortuguero to your hotel in San José, Puerto Viejo or the Arenal area.
